Overview
The Director of Design leads Amsted’s in-house design department — inspiring creativity, technical excellence, and innovation across architectural, interior, and selections teams. This role ensures every design upholds Amsted’s standards for functionality, craftsmanship, and client experience, maintaining the seamless integration between concept and construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor the design team (architectural designers, technologists, interior designers, and selections coordinators) to deliver exceptional, client-focused design solutions.
- Provide creative direction and technical oversight on design work, ensuring alignment with building codes, zoning, and Amsted standards.
- Advance Amsted’s design templates, policies, and procedures to support efficiency, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Oversee the accuracy, consistency, and presentation of design deliverables from concept through construction drawings.
- Stay at the forefront of residential design trends, sustainable practices, and building technology to inspire innovation.
- Collaborate closely with Sales and Construction Directors to ensure seamless project transitions and adherence to design intent.
- Manage vendor and supplier relationships related to design, finishes, and specifications.
- Participate as a member of the Leadership Team, contributing strategic insights related to design excellence and innovation and the future of the business.
Qualifications
- Degree/certificate in Architecture, Interior Design, or related field.
- 10+ years’ experience in residential design; design-build experience preferred.
- Strong leadership skills with ability to coach creative and technical professionals.
- Experience in leading a team, supporting their various deliverables and priorities.
- Advanced knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, Ottawa zoning, and residential construction detailing.
- Knowledge of in Revit, AutoCAD, and MS Office; experience with BuilderTrend an asset.
- Detail-oriented with exceptional communication and presentation skills.
